Two of the lower seeds in the Class 5A playoffs last season, Denham Springs and Central, will once again be fighting for their playoff lives when they meet this Friday.
The game will be broadcast live on Yurview Louisiana for customers of Cox Communications and will also stream live on Yurview.com.
Aiming for .500
Coming into this week with records of 4-4 (Central) and 4-5 (Denham Springs), along with two games remaining for each program, only the winner of this contest will have a shot at an above .500 regular-season record.
Last season, Central snuck into the postseason as the No. 32 seed in a 32-team tournament with a record of 5-7. While some wiggle room may exist, that means this matchup could also be a must-win to make the postseason.
Denham Springs had a strong start to the season but has lost three straight and have allowed 62 points in two of their last three defeats. Central fell last week to Zachary, but prior to that defeat, Central was on a four-game winning streak.
Last year, Denham Springs knocked off Central, 34-6, but Central has a 3-2 edge in the series since 2013.
Players to Watch
S Anthony Shaffer – Central
Standing at 6-feet tall and 202 pounds, 247Sports lists Shaffer as the No. 62 Louisiana recruit in the 2019 class. He has reportedly received offers from five programs, including SMU and Idaho.
QB Luke Lunsford – Denham Springs
Lunsford isn’t ranked on the 247Sports list, but his size — 6-foot-3 and 200 pounds — and arm strength could mean he gets more attention this coming offseason. As a junior, he still has a little time to get noticed.
Lunsford has already received some interest from UAB.
