How does a Division I coach get his team ready during a pandemic? Fourth year USF head coach Brian Gregory sheds some light on the challenges, procedures and pitfalls of navigating pre-season conditioning drills while trying to keep his student athletes safe.The communication that goes on with his players and staff in regards to the Black Lives Matter movement has presented a unique situation as well.
Gregory’s coaching tree includes Kevin O’Neal, Tom Izzo, Jud Heathcote, and was a former teammate of David Robinson at Navy as they advanced to the Elite 8 in 1986.
Prior to becoming the head coach at USF, Gregory spent five seasons at Georgia Tech (2011-16). Gregory steadily built the program, winning 16 games in years two and three and posting a 21-15 record with a pair of victories in the NIT in year five while playing a schedule that featured nine Top 25-ranked teams.
While at Dayton, the Flyers reached as high as No. 14 in the AP Top 25 rankings, the program’s highest ranking in 40 years, and knocked off numerous Top 25-ranked opponents, including victories over No. 6 Pittsburgh, No. 12 Louisville, No. 15 Marquette and No. 17 Xavier.
Dayton returned to the NCAA Tournament in 2009, defeating No. 6-seed West Virginia in the first round before falling to No. 3-seed Kansas as the Flyers posted a 27-8 record.
