Chubba Purdy might be Iowa State quarterback Brock Purdy’s younger brother, but there’s nothing little about his game.
After an electrifying junior season that saw him throw for 3,425 yards and 35 touchdowns and run for 1,152 yards and 23 scores for Perry High School in Gilbert, Arizona, Purdy emerged as one of the top high school quarterbacks and most-coveted recruits in the country.
“He has an unbelievable upside to him,” Perry coach Preston Jones said. “He has great arm strength. He has speed. He has size. He has the whole package.”
Purdy’s recruitment took off much faster than Brock, who became a national sensation as a true freshman last season at Iowa State. Brock set school and state passing records, but he didn’t land a Power 5 scholarship offer until after his career was over at Perry.
But Purdy is a recruiter’s dream.
He’s taller and bigger than his brother, at 6-foot-3 and 210 pounds. He’s also the true definition of a dual-threat quarterback with 5,049 career passing yards and 1,686 career rushing yards. He’s also a gamer, leading the Pumas to the 6A state final in 2018 and to a 4-2 record so far in 2019.
“Brock was a diamond in the rough, a hidden gem that was under recruited coming out of high school,” one Pac 12 recruiter said. “Chubba has it all. The size. The speed. The arm strength. The ability to make great decisions. Everybody wanted him.”
A Big 12 recruiter took it one step further.
“He’s the best quarterback in the country,” the Big 12 coach said. “Best in the country, period.”
He might just be.
Recruiters from coast-to-coast flocked to Perry to recruit Purdy. He had 22 scholarship offers – including from national programs like Arizona State, Boise State, Boston College, Cal, Colorado, Illinois, Kansas State, Michigan State, Oregon State, Purdue, Utah and Washington State – before committing to Louisville this summer.

“The staff was amazing,” Purdy told Rivals.com. “Oh, my goodness. The campus is awesome. Everything is close by and it’s a great college town. Coach (Scott) Satterfield is a great guy. He is so laid back and real. We went over the offense, and it’s very easy to catch on to. It fits me well.”
What also is fitting is his love for his brother and his family. They might have taken different recruiting paths, but Purdy doesn’t mind being called Brock’s little brother occasionally.
“We have an amazing relationship,” Purdy said. “We’re truly blessed for God giving us these talents. I love him so much, and I’m proud to be his brother.”
