A sea of purple banners fills every space of the gymnasium walls at Classical High School. Each banner displays the names of Hall of Famers, record breakers and state championship teams.
The Providence-school nestled in the heart of the state’s largest city has a rich athletic tradition and has produced many accomplished athletes who went on to have success at the college and professional level. One of the most notable is Classical alum Christina Batastina who was named New England Gatorade Player and went on to have a successful career at Stanford and professionally overseas.
Currently several former Purple athletes are competing at the highest collegiate level including Jehlani Galloway, a wide receiver at Boston College and Kealen Ives, a guard at Rider University. The list goes on.
But Classical is known for more than producing top athletes. The demanding college preparatory school is also known for its rigorous academic programs which have produced plenty of successful professionals. Providence Mayor Jorge Elorza, Cranston Mayor Allan Fung, several former RI Governors and a former college president all hail from Classic.
Classical offers resources to allow its students to achieve high standards in a rigorous learning environment. Classical encourages its students to pursue academic, athletic, artistic and personal growth so that they will experience success in colleges and universities. As a result, Classical repeatedly ranks as one the top RI public high schools and one of the highest performing public high schools nationwide.
