The Tennessee Williams/New Orleans Literary Festival hosts a Stella shouting contest each year in Jackson Square for the public. Participants bring Stanley Kowalski to life and shout Stella in the unforgettable scene from Tennessee Williams’ “A Streetcar Named Desire”. It’s free, and women contestants are welcome to try a little role reversal and yell for Stanley.
The contestants really enjoy their moments to shine which makes the event quite entertaining. They have to overly project their voices and be extra dramatic due to the large outdoor venue. It can be difficult to yell for a long time, so many of the performances can be extremely funny. Three finalists are selected to perform again, this time on stage. Prizes are awarded to two runner-ups and the first place winner.
