On a cold wintry night in South Louisiana, the first round of the LHSAA Division I Playoffs took center stage, as the #7 ranked Holy Cross Tigers hosted the #10 ranked St. Augustine Purple Knights at Joe Yenni Stadium, in New Orleans, Louisiana.
Holy Cross entered the contest as the undeniable favorite in this contest boasting a 7-3 regular-season record (3-3 in District 9-5A). St. Augustine entered the contest with a 5-5 regular-season record (1-5 in District 9-5A).
The first quarter of this contest was plagued with miscues as both teams adjusted to cold, wet weather. Neither team managed to put points on the board in the 1stquarter.
With 11:15 remaining in the 2ndquarter St. Augustine found the end zone with a 10-yard scamper by freshman running back, Justin Doyle.
Eight minutes later, Holy Cross responded with a 26 Yard TD Pass from Quarterback, John Dade Wooten, to receiver, Jalen Johnson.
However, the 2ndHalf of this contest was dominated by St. Augustine. The Purple Knights started the 3rdQuarter with three unanswered touchdowns. Holy Cross never found the end zone again in this contest.
Holy Cross was held to -13 Rushing Yards on the night and committed 4 costly turnovers. In the end, the Purple Knights came out victorious, and advance to the 2nd Round of the Division I Playoffs. They will take on the Catholic High Bears, from Baton Rouge, in the 2nd Round.
