The Putnam City Pirates opened 6A-I District 2 play at Putnam City Stadium Friday night with their defense firing on all cylinders to defeat the Edmond North Huskies 14-7.
Defense Leads the Way
Putnam City used some strong defensive play to get the upper hand in the first half. Pirates defensive end D’Eric Holmes had two sacks in the first quarter – then it was Cedric Young’s turn. He picked off an Ethan Barnes pass that led to a fourth and goal score from Marcellous Hawkins to a wide open Seth Wisby for a two yard touchdown. Putnam City was up 7-0 at the 11:09 mark of the second quarter.
On the ensuing possession, Cedric Young separated Edmond North quarterback Ethan Barnes from the football. Kaden Davis recovered the fumble to allow Greg Hayes, Jr. to run it in from the 8 and extend the Pirate lead to 14.
“Those guys stepped up to the challenge and 100% won that game. I’m extremely proud of those guys.”

That lead would hold up into the fourth quarter. Edmond North had 5 turnovers to only two for Putnam City, but late in the fourth they turned good field position into a quarterback sneak by Carson Horton that pulled the Huskies to within a touchdown.

After a Putnam City punt, Edmond North made it to the Putnam City 40 on a 36 yard pass from Horton to Lebron Jones with 1:52 left but they couldn’t finish their late rally. The Putnam City Pirates defeat the Huskies 14-7.
