Every year, drivers make bad decisions on our roadways, which can result in horrific car crashes. Safe driving could help to avoid a large number of these crashes.
The Virginia Department of Motor Vehicles’ Local Hero Series is back again, and it features real statewide first responders- who are in the act of responding to a car crash.
The campaign delivers a powerful message about the majority of deadly crashes being preventable, if people would just buckle up, slow down and drive sober.
Meet Gina
Gina E. Wuertzer is a Trauma Program Manager in Virginia Beach, and she is one of the local heroes from the campaign. She paid the studio a visit to talk about how her 27 years as a Registered Nurse helped shape her desire to help spread the word about injury prevention.
Spending 26 years of her tenure as a nurse in emergency rooms, she experienced lots of heartbreak resulting from bad decisions made behind the wheels of motor vehicles.
As someone who has worked in trauma for many years, Gina has some tips for anyone getting behind the wheel:
- Put the cellphones down
- Keep your eyes on the road
- If you’re a passenger, be an extra set of eyes for the driver! Help keep eyes on the road and also stay off your phone.
