With over 50 years serving the greater Hampton Roads area, Bud’s Plumbing, Heating, Air Conditioning & Electric knows just how important community is. To celebrate community members who are dedicating themselves to positively impacting the area, Buds brings us this segment of Hometown Heroes.
Mental illness is a condition which affects nearly 44 million people a year. However, although the numbers are great, most people who have a mental health illness are reluctant to speak about it or even seek help. This can lead to isolation, deep depression and oftentimes suicide.
Because of this, in 1979 a small group of families gathered around a kitchen table and created NAMI, the National Alliance on Mental Illness. Since then, NAMI has blossomed into the nation’s leading voice on mental health.
Today, Nami is an alliance of more than 600 local Affiliates and 49 State Organizations who work in communities nationwide, to raise awareness and provide support and education on mental illness that was not previously available to those in need.
Susannah Uroskie, the presidend of NAMI and Marquita, a member of NAMI, join Patricia to tell us even more about this organization and their involvement.
For those with mental illness, NAMI is a beacon of light with their many services including education, advocacy, support groups, community events and often, most importantly, simply listening via their helpline.
If you or someone you know are struggling with mental illness, please call the NAMI helpline at 800-950-6264 or visit their website https://www.nami.org/help.
You are not alone, please reach out and get the support you need and deserve.
