It happens in life, that as our loved ones age- we start to begin to worry about them and their safety. Particularly, their safety while on the roadways. This fear becomes worse during the holiday season, with so many people on the go.
Aging comes with lots of ailments that don’t exactly lend themselves to ease while driving.
Our friend Attorney Randy from Huffman & Huffman stopped by the studio with some tips on having hard conversations with aging loved ones.
Driving skills can change as we age. Sometimes taking driving skills classes as we age can help us assess how we are doing! It’s also important to keep up with regular doctor visits, and pay special attention to vision and hearing screening results. Both of those play a huge role in driving safety!
Also be aware if loved ones are on any medications. Be sure to check the side effects to ensure that the medicine is safe to drive on!
Another great safety tip is to drive during daylight, or at times when traffic is less heavy.
Patricia and Quincy put on their best “Grandma/Grandson” acting hats to try and portray a hard conversation about driving safety (you’re going to have to watch to see how they did!).
Attorney Randy says that when dealing with real life, it’s better to speak to your aging loved ones preemptively. Especially during the holiday season! Doing so after an incident occurs, could lead them to become defensive and hide things from you- which is a major safety concern.
