October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month. One out of every three women have experienced some kind of violence at the hand of an intimate partner, and every MINUTE in the United States- 20 people are abused by their romantic partner.
Statistically, this means that at least one of the three women in our interview have experienced domestic violence.
Neisha Himes is a survivor of domestic violence. She was in a violent relationship for about 5 years. During this time, she experienced multiple forms of abuse.
Once she finally escaped the relationship, she decided to share her story. After sharing, she was contacted to do speaking engagements and share her story even more- with a large audience.
This prompted her to start her foundation!
One of the most common misconceptions is that people can tell when someone is experiencing domestic violence. But it has no face, and it’s impossible to just tell who is experiencing domestic violence and who isn’t.
Another misconception is that it’s easy to just up and leave a violent situation. When dealing with a loved one who is experience domestic violence- be sure to offer support instead of placing blame on the victim.
