Patricia let us all in on a little secret: she doesn’t know how to swim!! So we sent her over to our friends at the YMCA Virginia Peninsula to take some lessons.
Patricia meets Elizabeth Elam, an aquatics executive at the Y to get started on her first swim lesson ever! On the first day of lessons, you meet your instructor and tell them a little bit more about your skill level.
Swim lessons at the YMCA start at only 6 months of age, and go all the way up to advanced lessons! Swim team is also available at the Y for anyone looking to get into competitive swimming.
The YMCA has group lessons that are 8 lessons per session. The aquatics personnel will let you know what your skill level is throughout the program, and at the end- so you know what to sign up for next!
May is water safety awareness month. Some safety measures to always keep in mind are:
- Never swim alone
- Kids should never swim without an adult
- If you don’t know how to swim- utilize a coast guard approved life jacket
The YMCA also has an option to sign up for private lessons! So the whole family can take lessons together if need be.
Last but not least, you don’t have to be a member of the Y to take swim lessons there! Everyone should check out their options.
