The time between now through New Year’s Day is a busy time of year, both in our personal lives and on the roads! It is also known as one of the most dangerous times to be on the road due to heavy traffic, distracted and drunk drivers, stress, and inclement weather. It’s important to be aware and prepared for the heightened risks on the road.
Brad Huffman with Huffman & Huffman joined the Living 757 crew to share tips on staying safe while driving this holiday season – whether you are driving locally to a holiday celebration or traveling out of town to visit family and friends.
Brad shared that drinking and driving and distracted drivers are the biggest dangers on the road during the holiday season. If you are like many adults and plan to celebrate the holidays with alcohol, be sure to designate a driver BEFORE you start drinking. When driving, be alert and know how to recognize an impaired driver. Lastly, always buckle up. Many drunk driving deaths occur because the victim was not wearing a seat belt.
If you are planning a long road trip to visit family for the holidays, Brad shares the following advice:
The key things to think of as you are preparing for a long car trip are:
- Make your vehicle is serviced, and that you have an emergency kit
- Leave early and try to avoid heavy traffic times
- Do not drive while tired!
- Make sure to monitor weather conditions
- Be patient, everyone is trying to get to where they are going- safely!
- Make sure to bring snacks and things to do for your children
Brad has mentioned an emergency road kit, and thankfully Ashley has hers with her. Her kit contains pajamas, slippers, and a video game! Brad explains that your kit should include emergency items like water, snacks, blankets, flashlights, a phone charger, and anything else you should need if you were to end up stranded for any length of time.
