Watch a full game replay of high school football: Papillion La Vista South vs. Omaha North (Nebraska) – Friday, October 4th, 2019.
Omaha North scored touchdowns on three straight offensive possessions to open the game and mixed in a defensive score to win its homecoming game over Papillion-LaVista South 41-26, snapping a three-game losing streak.
Though Papillion-LaVista South racked up 411 yards of total offense, the Titans committed several costly errors that kept points off the board. The weather played a factor early on a windy, chilly, sometimes rainy evening at Nile Kinnick Stadium.
Following a short punt into the strong wind, Omaha North took its first possession from the Papillion-LaVista South 19-yard line. Two plays later, LaVaughn Luellen scampered into the endzone to give the Vikings the early lead.
The Titans answered on their next drive in the form of a 67-yard pass from Connor Crandall to Jackson Horn.
Still in the first quarter, North took over on its own 42-yard line. The Vikings went 58 yards in 10 plays and capped the drive with Darius Hagan pass to tight end John Farmer. The 14-7 lead was one North would never relinquish.
On the ensuing Titan possession, the game appeared to be headed for a shootout. Crandall hooked up with Landon Jewell on a pass that set up the offense on the North eight-yard line. But holding was called on the play and the 40-yard gain was negated. On the next play, running back Nick Sich fumbled and North defensive back Keshaun Williams scooped and scored from 40 yards out. It was the lone black mark on an otherwise stellar night for Sich, who rushed 36 times for 155 yards.
Undeterred by the two-score deficit, Papillion-LaVista South drove deep into North territory on its next possession. On third down play when it looked as though Sich had taken the ball to the North one-yard line to set up first and goal, the Titans were called for illegal motion and once again had a big play wiped out. The conversion on the ensuing down came up short and Trenton Brehm came on for a field goal. His kick was good, but the whistle had blown for delay of game. From five yards further back, Brehm’s kick sailed wide and the Titans came up empty.
North took the ball and went 80 yards following the miss. Luellen, on the fifth play of the drive, showed great patience in finding a hole before racing 62 yards for a score and his second touchdown. Luellen finished with 156 yards on 13 carries.
Papillion-LaVista South was able to add a field goal before the half to make it 34-10.
North’s junior running back Sam Scott added two touchdowns in the second half. Papillion-LaVista South got second half touchdowns from Jewell and Will Swanson plus another Brehm field goal to make it a two-score game in the fourth.
Following a fumble by North’s Tre’on Fairgood-Jones, Papillion-LaVista South had a chance to make it a one-score deficit. But as the Titans took the field, rain began to slash across the night sky, becoming heaviest during a crucial fourth down. The fourth-down pass slipped through the fingers of receiver Jackson Trout, giving North its first win in a month.
North moves to 2-4 on the season and 1-1 in district play, keeping their playoff hopes alive. Papillion-LaVista South, also with hopes for the postseason in bloom, falls to 3-3 and 1-1 in the district.
