With 12.9 seconds left in the fourth quarter, Creighton Prep quarterback Sam Bonebrake found Mason Armstead in the back of the endzone for a touchdown.
The late score gave the Junior Jays a 45-41 lead and their first win at Phelps Field since 2008. It was Bonebrake’s first career start and his heady play on the final drive gave Creighton Prep a chance. Twice on the drive he was able to scramble out of trouble and get out of bounds to stop the clock.
On the penultimate play, his fourth-down connection with Thomas Corpuz kept the drive alive and set up the thrilling finish.
It looked as though Westside’s Dylan Plautz might win the quarterback duel when he drove the Warrior offense inside the 10 yard line, setting up a field goal try by Jack Bush with just more than two minutes remaining.
Bush punched it through for the 41-38 lead, but it wouldn’t hold up.
Plautz finished the night with 28 completions on 45 attempts and 375 yards passing with two touchdowns. He added two rushing touchdowns, but threw two interceptions, both to outside linebacker Nickthaniel Wells.
Outside of the final drive, the Creighton Prep ground game won the day. Senior running back Elisha Burts ran wild, piling up 262 yards on 27 carries. His 66-yard touchdown run midway through the fourth quarter might have been the play of the night, if not for the Bonebrake-to-Armstead heroics.
Junior Jays’ fullback Luke Sims added three touchdowns and a two-point conversion to the rushing effort.
At the half, Westside led 21-13 in a game that felt like it could have been spread further. Creighton Prep’s eight first half penalties contributed to two three-and-out possesions and another punt.
Westside sophomore receiver Cal Weidemann caught five passes for 112 yards in the first half. He didn’t register another catch in the game. Running back Jaden Kohls (9 catches for 124 yards) and Caleb Schweigert (12 catches for 109 yards) featured heavily a second half that saw 52 points scored between the two teams.
