Helix

Helix High (5-3, 2-0) clinched at least a tie for the Grossmont Hills League with a 29-14 win over Grossmont this past weekend, their 25th consecutive win in the battle for the Campbell Musket. Helix High senior running back Christian Washington carried the load offensively, rushing 21 times for 203 yards and three scores. For the season, he totaled 1,335 rushing yards and 18 touchdowns. Defensively, Xavier Van had two interceptions in the win for the Scotties.

“He has a special type of elusiveness and speed that makes him pretty unique,” Helix High head coach Robbie Owens told the San Diego Union-Tribune about his talented tailback Washington. The Scotties have had their share of impressive runners throughout the years, including Reggie Bush (yes, the former Heisman Trophy winner in 2005 at USC) along with Derrell Hutsona, Darrion Hancock, Nate Stinson, and Elelyon Noa.

Granite Hills

Meanwhile, Granite Hills (4-5, 0-2) failed to convert a late two-point conversion in a tough 21-20 loss to Steele Canyon this past Friday. Patrick Brady’s 16-yard touchdown scamper pulled the Eagles to within striking distance before the failed two-point attempt. Joaquin Thomas had a 62-yard interception return for a touchdown in the loss.

The Eagles were the de facto spring season champions, beating Helix for the first time since 2005 en route to posting a 5-1 overall record after the pandemic postponed the traditional 2020 fall football season in the CIF. Granite Hills returned 12 starters from last year’s team with six on offense and six on defense returning this fall. Helix High, one of the winningest programs in the San Diego Section’s history, went just 2-4 during the 2021 spring campaign.

There’s familiarity between the coaching staffs with Helix High’s Robbie Owens in the midst of his sixth season and Kellan Cobbs completing his 10th year as Granite Hills head coach. Owens was a former walk-on wide receiver at Boise State that transferred to Division II Colorado Mesa University and has spent a career in coaching since completing his collegiate career. Cobbs is a Granite Hills alum, having graduated from the school in 2005 before returning as its head coach in 2012.

Helix’s proud program includes a former Heisman trophy winner in Reggie Bush and the former No. 1 overall pick in the 2005 NFL draft in Alex Smith as alums.
