This Friday’s GameTime matchup on Yurview Louisiana pits two of the best high school football programs in Baton Rouge. Parkview Baptist, who has won five state titles with the latest coming in 2015 and Southern Lab, who is a dominant program on the Class 1A level.
These crosstown foes will face off at Parkview Baptist- and don’t be fooled by their records. Each team is 1-3, but they’ve played extremely difficult non-district schedules.
Parkview started the season by losing on the final play of the game to Catholic High. The next week, the Eagles beat East Ascension, but the following week lost to the one of the state’s best teams, John Curtis. Last week, Parkview suffered another heartbreaking loss as they came up six points short versus Walker.
Southern Lab started the year by facing the defending champs in Division III, the Riverside Rebels, and it was all Riverside. The next week, the Kittens could not contain the U-High Cubs and lost 35-16. Lab fell to 0-3 after dropping a high scoring affair to Scotlandville. The Kittens finally got into the win last week with a convincing 36-8 victory over Broadmoor.
Southern Lab has already been through its fair share of adversity. Before the season, the school was found guilty of recruiting violations and must vacate its two state championship titles from the last two years, and a runner-up trophy from three years ago.
Head Coach and former LSU Tiger QB Marcus Randall was fired, but former Southern Lab QB Darrell Asberry stepped in with over two decades of college coaching experience.
Asberry has this team focused on finishing the season strong and he has a great group of athletes to mentor.
Quarterback Quincy Filmore is super athletic and very confident. Running back Tyrion Davis is committed to LSU, while fellow running back Charvis Thornton is a very elusive with the ball in his hands.
On defense, Southern Lab might have the best linebacker duo in the state in Damone Clark and Marcus Martin. Clark is another LSU verbal pledge.
The Kittens defense will have its hands full with Parkview’s option attack on offense.
Alexander Aucoin is Parkview’s quarterback and he’s a threat to throw, but of course the Eagles will rely mostly on its ground game.
The two main ball carriers are Parker Kirby, who had two touchdowns against Curtis and the speedy Cole Mayet, who is the son of head coach Jay Mayet.
And if the defense starts to guard against the run, the Eagles are not afraid to throw the ball to talented wide receiver Kyle Washington.
On defense, Evan Chaney leads Parkview’s line, who is small, but he’s all over the field and an excellent pass rusher.
Mayet leads the team in tackles at the linebacker position.
The defensive secondary has the speedy Terry Toliver at one cornerback and Colton Jumonville is a physical free safety, who is not afraid to play against the run.
It should be a good one as these two teams are desperate to finish off the first half with a victory and momentum heading into district play.
