As we all begin our holiday prep, this “Locally New England” episode was produced to help address community needs, from mental health and food insecurity to holiday stress relief. “Locally New England” holds the holiday season in high regard, especially because both the holidays and the show focus on building a supportive community. Together, we aim to make this time of year magical and meaningful for everyone, whether through shared meals, holiday events, or even a glass of wine to unwind.
Gold’s Wine And Spirits: Every Sip Is Pure Gold
Those of us at “Locally New England” who enjoy throwing a good party, holiday themed or not, understand that the most essential consideration when preparing the event’s drink menu can be choosing the right store. The right store has both a large variety and also readily available assistance. After a location change which increased their size threefold, Gold’s Wine and Spirits in Middletown is that store.
To clarify, Gold’s new location has enabled them to carry 2,000 new items and reduce prices on almost everything in the store. They now offer the largest selection of wine, liquor, and beer on Aquidneck Island. The luxurious space also offers Gold’s the chance to hold tastings which they previously did not have room to host.
Owner and proprietor Jason Gold believes one of their most interesting additions is a fully operational tasting center within the store. Gold shares, “Our clients can try anything they want before they purchase it. Sometimes people don’t want to commit to a thirty, forty, fifty dollar bottle of anything without knowing they like it first. This gives them the opportunity to do it.”
East Bay Regional Coalition: Managing The Stress Of The Season
It Begins to set in around … NOW. As much as holiday joy can overtake us, feelings of anxiety, pressure and depression also often arise as well. Thankfully, East Bay Regional Coalition, a community-based organization focused on substance abuse prevention and mental health exists to answer the call.
Make no mistake. East Bay is no holiday endeavor. They work year-round with folks who need their helping hand. “Locally New England” hosts Meredith and Joe recently learned more about their offerings, including a newly developed program called “Stronger Together” which teaches people how to recognize someone who might be having a mental health challenge. Also new is “In Shape,” a program dedicated to wellness goals and substance misuse.
Suicide rates have unfortunately increased recently. Steven Eiland, MPH CPS, East Bay’s Mental Health Awareness Training Project Director, feels suicide is an “unrecognized public health crisis. We lose someone every 11 minutes to suicide,” he notes. East Bay prepares folks to identify people in the community who might be at risk for such behavior by teaching CSSRS also known as Columbia Protocol.
East Bay truly exemplifies a community reaching out to help other members of that community. Tune in to “Locally New England” to learn more
