Visiting Dunham edged Newman 22-20 to advance to the LHSAA Division III semifinals. This is Dunham’s first trip to the semifinals since 2004.
Kalante Wilson led the way on the ground for Dunham with 199 yards. Dunham quarterback Anthony Safford passed for three touchdowns.
“Newman is a great team, and I’m proud we were able to pull it out,” Dunham coach Neil Weiner said to NOLA.com. “…It’s a great accomplishment for these young men. We wanted to run the ball tonight, and Kalante allowed us to do that.”
Wilson entered the pivotal game aware he’d be heavily relied upon and he definitely delivered. Wilson sealed the victory with a gritty two-yard run.
“We knew if we came out here and ran the ball that we would win,” Wilson said to NOLA.com. “I knew they were loading up the box, so I bounced it outside, lowered my head and got the first down. It just feels great to advance.”
