Casteel vs. Higley Football 9-28-18 (Replay)

The Casteel Colts made a bold statement on Friday night after they defeated the Higley Knights 56-24. The Colts made the jump to from 3A to 5A this season after going 14-0 on their way to a state championship last season.

This matchup featured two high profile quarterbacks. For the Knights, Spencer Brasch is committed to Cal and the Colts Gunner Cruz is committed to Washington State.

Casteel jumped out to an early lead with a balanced offensive attack as they were able to neutralize Higley’s outstanding defensive line featuring top ranked players in Ty Robinson, Jason Harris and Logan Maxwell (Utah St. commit).

Higley’s offense was only able to muster 3 points in the first half as they were limited to 16 rushing yards and 43 passing yards in the first half. Higley also committed 8 penalties for 50 yards and went 0/5 on third down conversions. On the other side, Casteel went 8/9 on third down conversions and had 18 first downs on their way to 21 points before halftime.

Both offenses started clicking in the 3rd quarter with each team scoring 21 points. Higley looked leaned heavily on their Senior quarterback as Brasch threw for 2 touchdowns and ran for another in the 3rd quarter. Brasch would finish the game with 265 yards passing, 2 touchdowns and 2 interceptions.

Casteel was led all night by Cruz as he continued his incredible season. The Colts added another 14 points in the 4th quarter to leave no doubt about the outcome. Cruz finished with 310 passing yards and 1 touchdown but the difference was his ability to find the end zone on the ground, he rushed 9 times for 45 yards and 4 touchdowns. The Colts were led in receiving by Zach Nelson who had 13 receptions for 186 yards and 1 touchdown. Jayce Knutsen led the Colts in rushing with 94 yards and 2 touchdowns.

Higley will look to get things back on track next week when they host Campo Verde and Casteel will try and keep things rolling when they host Gilbert.
