An estimated one in eight men will be diagnosed with prostate cancer in his lifetime. Prostate cancer is the second most common form of cancer in men. Only skin cancer is more prevalent. Prostate cancer is more likely to develop in African American men. About six cases in 10 are diagnosed in men who are 65 or older, and it is rare in men under 40.
Prostate cancer is curable if caught early, so early detection is of utmost importance. In many cases, prostate cancer doesn’t cause any symptoms until the disease process is in its later stages. For that reason, annual screening exams are a critical part to diagnosing prostate cancer early.
Early diagnosis allows a wider variety of treatment options, as well as a chance to stop the prostate cancer from spreading elsewhere in the body.
There are many options for treatment when it comes to this type of cancer, the most advanced of which is robotic surgery.
Riverside Health System goes a step further with recovery, and provides a “cancer navigator” to help patients with anything they need at all, day or night. This helps carry on with every day life!
Especially if prostate cancer runs in your family- be sure to get screened on a yearly basis.
