Former Sapulpa star Temira Poindexter held the ball at the top of the key. She dribbled left and drove the lane. The only thing between her and the basket was former Piedmont guard and current University of Tulsa teammate Delanie Crawford.
The two met in mid-air, and Crawford got the better of the matchup, as the two collided and the ball rolled harmlessly out of bounds.
“Oh ya, she fouled me,” confirmed Poindexter after the game. She would probably say that she didn’t, though.”
“I definitely fouled her,” said Crawford with a laugh.
Crawford got the last laugh as well, as she and her Large West teammates escaped with a 55-51 win over Poindexter and the Large East team in the annual Oklahoma Coaches Association All-State girls basketball game at Jenks High School’s Frank Herald Field House.
Despite the loss and the no-call on her collision with Crawford, Poindexter still managed to score a game-high 15 points for the Large East squad.
“It was fun,” said Crawford, who contributed seven points in the winning effort, “especially getting to know more of the girls that I played against my whole high school career.”
Poindexter, a 6-1 forward, capped off a great high school career that saw her lead the Lady Chieftains to the 5A state title this past season. She averaged nearly 21 points and five rebounds per game her senior season.
Crawford was happy to walk off the court with one more victory as a high school player, and the 5-10 guard plans to regularly remind Poindexter that her team won in their final showdown as opponents.
“For sure,” admitted Crawford. “She was talking trash all day before the game.”
Both players can now turn their attention full-time to the college game. The Golden Hurricane duo have already been practicing on campus with new head coach Angie Nelp and her staff for nearly two months.
“I’m really excited,” added Poindexter, who’s father, Ray, played for the Golden Hurricane from 1995-96. “I know the new coaches are going to make a big impact.”
“It’s great,” confirmed Crawford. “I love the new coaching staff. It’s going to be a really fun season and I love that ‘T’ is on our team, so I don’t have to play against her.”
