Lisa Chenet of the CLP Financial Group only scratched the surface of financial planning with Quincy and Patricia. We were able to get some more information on just what the people at the CLP Financial Group can do to help us prepare for the future.
What does CLP Financial Group do?
We bring holistic planning to working class families. The high net worth – people with 10 million and more – have always had access to holistic planning with the attorney, the financial advisor, the stockbroker, the insurance agent, and the accountant collaborating on their behalf. But the working class have rarely gotten that. The working class, people who have needed it the most, have primarily been served by salespeople selling investments, annuities, trusts, wills, and tax returns. We are changing that!
We care for clients’ entire financial picture so that all the pieces work together holistically. We work collaboratively with a network of financial professionals, estate planners, attorneys, and other experts who make sure that our clients get the specialized advice they need.
What sets you apart from others?
What sets us apart is that CLP Financial Group has specialized divisions within our company. Such as Woman’s Worth. Woman’s Worth is all about empowering female clients to ask questions and take ownership of their financial security, to understand their options and individual needs so they are better prepared to take on the financial burden themselves when the time comes. According to WISER (Woman’s Institute for a Secure Retirement) 80% of women will die single.
We have a tax and accounting division where we prepare individual, business, and non-profit income taxes. We also provide accounting and bookkeeping services.
What we are best known for in the 757 is for our retirement income planning services.
Where are you located?
We are located at 501 Independence Pkwy. Suite 350 Chesapeake, VA 23320.
What is your slogan and why is it your slogan?
“Everyone needs a financial coach in their corner”
Many people have no idea where to find the answers to the financial questions running through their mind. It’s also difficult to know who to trust for good financial advice. Add to that the sheer complexity involved in financial planning and how overwhelming it can be to get organized. It’s no wonder that people don’t know how to begin and who to turn to. Money doesn’t come with instructions. You need a Plan! You need a Coach!
How did you get into this business?
Several years ago, after my divorce, I was looking for help managing my IRAs and mutual funds. I went to a financial advisor and all he wanted to do was sell me products. I wanted a retirement plan! I was worried about running out of money in retirement. I wanted to be educated on my options. I didn’t want to hand over my money and be told to go away and come back when you’re ready to retire. There had to be a better way. A friend recommended CLP and I became a client first and then an employee a few months later!
What’s the most important thing you do?
We provide our clients with financial peace of mind.
What do you love most about what you do?
Seeing the sense of relief when I can show a client a solution to something they were really worried about. Whether that’s having enough income in retirement, planning for college expenses, or taking care of their parents.
Why do you do what you do?
I was blessed to grow up in a financially literate household. Unfortunately, that’s not the case for most folks.
If you don’t know, what you don’t know, how are you supposed to know what questions to ask??? Financial education is key.
I want everyone to be able to make better, informed decisions and feel confident about their financial decisions.
Because not asking is no excuse for not knowing. Once financial education is achieved, we can move on to solidifying generational wealth.
What impact (if any) does what you do have on the world and the people in it?
Being able to provide holistic financial education to underserved population in our community such as; the working class, the elderly, women, and minorities.
What is your inspiration for continuing every day?
Knowing that the advice that I give everyday literally changes people’s lives.
Whether it’s showing someone how to maximize their social security income or helping grandparents leave a lasting financial legacy for their grandchildren.
What’s your primary goal when attracting new business?
Value – Can I provide value to this client? If I can help or give you some guidance on the first visit – I do – free of charge. My primary goal is to educate and put you in a better position than you were before we met. That’s why we have free webinars available. Education is key.
Can you share the funniest/craziest/most surprising story or experience you’ve had while doing what you do?
This happened pre-COVID when we were still holding seminars at restaurants.
We were telling our guests “Did you know – that if you are divorced, were married for at least 10 years and a day and your spouse made more income than you – you might be entitled to take social security on their higher record when you retire?” One lady squealed and started clapping!! We had to stop the presentation because the whole room was laughing. She shared with us that she was previously married for 15 years and that she had no idea she might be entitled to his social security. We made sure to let her know that social security has claiming rules – one being that she had to be single when she went to claim on his record. Knowledge is powerful!
