We caught up with O-Sky and asked her about her music, and what it was like to collaborate with her friend Max on this delightful performance.
How old were you when you started playing guitar?
I was eight years old when I started playing guitar. My grandparents gave me my first guitar for Christmas and I haven’t stopped playing since.
Do you write the music and the lyrics for your songs?
I write all the music and lyrics for my songs. I’ve noticed that I usually end up writing both at the same time, even though the music often comes easier to me.
What inspires you to write?
I find inspiration from so many different sources. I’ve written songs based on my feelings and experiences, and I’ve also written songs inspired by media and mythology, songs from another’s perspective, and (probably my favorite) a song about furniture.
What are your goals as a musician?
To be honest, my biggest goal as a musician is to create something meaningful. Knowing that my music has had a positive
impact in someone’s life is the best feeling in the world.
Do you often collaborate on songs, or is this a first?
I absolutely love collaborating, and I try to do it as much as possible, although that has been a challenge over the past year. I have co-written songs with friends, mentors, and even family throughout my artistic journey. It is always a great experience.
When I heard Max play some of his original songs, I was super impressed. I pretty much asked him to collaborate with me as soon as he stepped back from the mic.
What do you like about working with other musicians?
Working with other musicians is amazing because it opens up a whole new world of possibilities. I am always songwriting, and after awhile I can start to get too used to my own thoughts and decisions. When that happens, I end up writing the same song that I’ve already written. Working with another musician not only allows me to see things from their perspective, but it lets us bounce ideas off of each other and create something totally different and unexpected. Writing with Max has been especially great- he has this way of taking ideas I’ve been stuck on for awhile, and moving them in a completely new direction. To him it’s a natural choice, to me it’s a spark of inspiration! All of the sudden, the ideas start pouring out. I really love what we’ve written so far.
