It’s been a kinetic off-season for the Rhode Island Rams men’s basketball team and we’ve got a lot to talk about.
We’re all in unprecedented times caused by the public health situation. In Kingston, physical life on the 1,200 acre campus is at a standstill with students returning home. Coursework is being completed virtually.
The games are cancelled through the spring and, realistically, until further notice. Administrators and coaches must pivot and press on in managing and building programs in this environment.
Since their season was terminated on March 12 via the cancellation of the Atlantic 10 Tournament Championship in Brooklyn, David Cox and his men’s basketball staff have been busy.
Player movement abounds.
Three significant players have transferred from a 21-win team. Star guard Fatts Russell is testing the NBA Draft waters and can return to school. And Cox welcomes Maryland transfers Makhi & Makhel Mitchell, Charlotte transfer Malik Martin (younger brother of Hassan), and promising freshman guard Tres Berry who chose Rhode Island over Auburn, Tennessee and West Virginia, among others. All signed letters of intent announced on April 15. They’ll join two other talented freshmen newcomers this fall, Ishmael Leggett and Elijah Wood.
Two scholarships remain to perhaps be offered and, of course, there’s a program to run and young men to lead from afar.
