Tulsa Edison senior running back Sevion Morrison was finding holes hard to come by recently in a district showdown against Bishop Kelley. The Comets kept the Nebraska Cornhusker commit bottled up for much of the first half, holding the electrifying tailback to just 17 yards on his first seven carries.
Most young backs would get frustrated with such a slow start, but not Morrison. The all-time leading rusher in Edison history knew it was only a matter of time before he would break loose.
“I knew things were going to start off with a battle,” admitted Morrison after the game, “because i knew I was a key guy that Bishop Kelley’s defense was going to be aiming towards. I’m not going to say I was frustrated, but I knew we needed to make something happen.”
Make something happen he did. Morrison exploded for more than 200 yards in the last two and a half quarters en route to a 253-yard, four touchdown performance in Edison’s convincing 33-14 win over the Comets.
“He just amazes me every week,” said Edison head coach Tony Daniels in a postgame interview. “There are a lot of things that kid can do.”
What that kid has done is rush for nearly 1,000 yards through the first five games of his senior season and shattered the school career rushing record previously held by OU great Spencer Tillman.
“It’s really special,” raved Daniels. “You see that kind of stuff on Saturdays and Sundays, but when you actually get to coach that kid and you get to coach some of the other talent that’s around him, it’s unbelievable.”
“I think Sevion is an awesome kid and an awesome human being,” said Bishop Kelley head coach JJ Tappana. “I’m really proud of his success. I’m really proud for him to be able to go on and play college football.”
“He’s an outstanding player,” remarked Claremore head coach Jarrett Hart, whose team lost to Edison 26-6 earlier this season. “He’s going to Nebraska for obvious reasons. He’s so dynamic, so explosive. He’s got it all. He’s strong, he’s fast, he’s quick, he’s elusive. He’s an outstanding player.”
Many are saying it’s outstanding what Daniels has accomplished in his four seasons at Edison. The Eagles won six games last season, which was their best performance in 13 years, and they’re on pace to better that record this season.
“Coach Daniels has done a fabulous job over there getting that program turned around,” said Hart.
“I’m really proud of Tony and what he’s done at Edison,” added Tappana. “He’s doing just a fantastic job over there.”
