The Valley Vista Monsoon (3-3) hosted the Copper Canyon Aztecs (1-5) Friday night in Surprise. The Monsoon scored on their first offensive play when junior wide receiver Liam Kelleher caught a 28 yard touchdown from junior quarterback Burton Delay IV. Kelleher finished the night with 6 receptions for 94 yards and 2 touchdowns.
The Aztecs defense forced a fumbled later in the 1st quarter that gave their offense great field position. The offense capitalized on the turnover with a 30 yard touchdown reception by sophomore wide receiver Derrick Sailor. Sailor was the long bright spot for Copper Canyon, he would finished with 3 receptions for 94 yards and 2 touchdowns.
The Monsoon would score 28 unanswered points in the 2nd quarter led by Delay IV. The dual threat quarterback connected on touchdown passes to junior tight end Carson Allcock and senior wide receiver Derek Miller, he also added a rushing touchdown in the quarter. Delay IV would finish 18/34 passing, 231 yards, 4 touchdowns and added 51 rush yards to go along with his rushing touchdown.
Valley Vista scored a special teams touchdown off a botched snapped by the Aztecs on a punt attempt. That score gave the Monsoon a 35-6 lead at the half.
Valley Vista added a touchdown in the 3rd quarter on a 40 yard catch and run from Kelleher. With the game out of hand each team scored a touchdown in the 4th quarter. For the Aztecs it was Sailor finding the end zone on a 55 yard reception and for the Monsoon, senior running back Aiden Cunningham had a 65 yard touchdown run.
The Aztecs will travel to Westview next week and the Monsoon will play at Tolleson.
