1st & 10: University Lab Goes Unbeaten, Top Recruit Flips Commitment

For much of the country, the high school football season has come to an end. And for those schools still playing, the end is drawing near.

Therefore, it’s time to put a cap on the 2018 season for the YurView regions. This week’s roundup will include a list of all the state champions from Arizona, Louisiana, Nebraska and Oklahoma this year.

Here’s a look at some top high school football headlines, as well as those state champions lists, entering the weekend of Dec. 13-15:

1. University Lab ends season with title

University Lab’s impressive season ended with a high-scoring affair in the Louisiana Division II state championship.

The Cubs capped their 13-0 season with a 55-46 win over St. Thomas More in the state title game. University Lab scored 34 or more points in every game this season.

It is the second straight year that University Lab went undefeated and won the state championship.

2. Top commitment flips to Alabama

After being committed to Michigan since Sept. 18, safety Daxton Hill (Booker T. Washington High School, Tulsa, Okla.), a 5-star recruit in the 2019 class per the 247sports composite rankings, flipped his commitment to Alabama this past Saturday.

Hill is the top safety recruit and the top Oklahoma recruit in the class, according to 247sports composite.

This season, Hill helped Booker T. Washington go 8-4. The Hornets lost to Stillwater in the Class 6A-II state semifinals.

7. Rankings update

Allen (Texas) remains the No. 1 team in the USA Today Super 25 poll. The Eagles are 14-0 and will play Duncanville in the 6A-I state semifinals this weekend.

University Lab (La.) moved up one spot to No. 15 after ending its 13-0 season with a state championship.

Chandler (Ariz.), which went 13-1 and won a state title, moved up one spot to No. 17 this week. Centennial (Ariz.), another Arizona state champion which went 14-0, moved up one spot to No. 24.

8. Incredible Play of the Week

Down by eight points in the final two minutes, Warren Easton was driving against Edna Karr in the Louisiana Class 4A state championship game this past Saturday.

Karr linebacker Joseph Thomas made sure his team didn’t blow its lead.

Thomas forced a fumble, recovered it and returned it 34 yards close to midfield to preserve Edna Karr’s 28-20 victory. It was a clutch play at a key moment for Karr, which won its third straight state title.

9. Top Performance of the Week

Quarterback Simeon Ardoin played a big part in Eunice’s 59-47 win over Sterlington in the Louisiana Class 3A state championship game.

Ardoin had 153 rushing yards and four total touchdowns, three of which came in the first half, to lift the Bobcats to the program’s first state title since 1982.

10. Recent commitments

2019 offensive tackle Tanner Hawthorne (Glendale Community College, Glendale, Ariz.), a 2-star recruit per 247sports, committed to Southern Miss on Dec. 9.

2019 defensive tackle Quintlan Cobb (Kaplan High School, Kaplan, La.), a 3-star recruit per 247sports, committed to Louisiana on Dec. 9.

2019 outside linebacker Ni’Kendrick Carter (Many High School, Many, La.), a 3-star recruit per the 247sports composite rankings, committed to FIU on Dec. 9.
