There was a lot of great high school football action last week, but this week’s slate of games may be poised to deliver even bigger highlights.

Here’s a look at 10 of the top headlines entering another week of the high school football season, with a full slate of games scheduled for the weekend of Oct. 11-13.

1. Taylor set to return for Carl Albert

Carl Albert (Okla.) is off to a 6-0 start this season, but it has a tough challenge this week against Guthrie (Okla.), which is also unbeaten. However, Carl Albert is getting a boost heading into the matchup.

According to The Oklahoman, running back Dadrion Taylor will return from injury for Friday’s rivalry game.

Carl Albert has won the matchup against Guthrie each of the past two seasons. The game can be watched on YurView and will be streamed live on YurView.com.

2. Freshman fuels Millard North victory

Ben Weindel became the first freshman to start at quarterback for Millard North (Neb.) this past Friday. And in his first career varsity start, he led an impressive win.

Weindel led a pair of late touchdown drives to power Millard North to a 17-16 overtime win.

After an 0-4 start to the season, Millard North has won three straight games.

3. North Carolina kicker shows off impressive leg

This highlight may not have occurred during a game, but it is still impressive to watch.

Joshua Karty, who plays for Western Alamance (N.C.), kicked a 65-yard field goal during warmups prior to his team’s game this past Friday.

And this wasn’t even a one-time boot. One of Karty’s coaches took to Twitter, sharing that the kicker has made attempts from this distance numerous times during practice and warmups this season.

4. Close game results in unusual score

It’s not often that you see a high school football game end with a score like this.

This past Friday, Rockwall-Heath (Texas) defeated Mesquite (Texas), 6-4. Mesquite forced safeties on back-to-back possessions in the first quarter to hold a 4-0 lead for much of the game.

Rockwall-Heath scored a touchdown in the third quarter, and the game ended with a score that is more commonly seen on a baseball diamond.

5. Top defensive back returns to Chandler

Chandler (Ariz.) is having a strong season, and this past weekend, the team got even better.

Senior defensive back David Eppinger played in his first game of the season this past Friday in a win over Brophy Prep (Ariz.). Eppinger had not played this season because the Arizona Interscholastic Association Executive Board denied him hardship due to the prior-contact bylaw, according to Richard Obert of The Arizona Republic.

Chandler moved up one spot to No. 23 in the USA Today Super 25 rankings after its 56-7 victory.

6. Matchup to watch: Mater Dei vs. St. John Bosco

The top two teams in the USA Today Super 25 poll face off when these two California powers play on Friday night.

Mater Dei, ranked No. 1, is 6-1 with its only loss coming via forfeit in the season opener. St. John Bosco is 7-0.

Whichever team wins this matchup should certainly be the No. 1 team in the Super 25 next week.

8. Incredible Play of the Week

Reggie Harris caught a go-ahead touchdown with less than two minutes to go to lift Gaffney (S.C.) to a 22-19 win over Dorman (S.C.) this past Friday. And the fact it pushed his team to victory isn’t the only part that made this play spectacular.

Harris caught the pass near the back of the end zone and got one foot in while falling out of bounds.

9. Top Performance of the Week

Jack Miller led Chaparral (Ariz.) to a 40-37 win over Sandra Day O’Connor (Ariz.) this past Friday.

Miller passed for 369 yards and six touchdowns while helping Chaparral improve to 5-2. The junior is committed to play for Ohio State. He is a 4-star recruit per the 247sports composite rankings.

10. Recent commitments

2019 defensive end Bralen Trice (Sandra Day O’Connor High School, Glendale, Ariz.), a 3-star recruit per the 247sports composite rankings, committed to Washington on Oct. 6.

2019 running back Sampson James (Avon High School, Avon, Ind.), a 4-star recruit per the 247sports composite rankings, committed to Indiana on Oct. 7. He is the No. 8 running back in the class and was previously committed to Ohio State.
