Omaha Westside started nearly as poorly as possible in the rivalry game against Creighton Prep before reeling off 37 straight points en route to a 37-2 victory.
On Westside’s first play from scrimmage, quarterback Cole Payton overshot his receiver. Prep defensive back Thomas Corpusz snagged the ball for an interception, setting up the Junior Jay offense in Westside territory.
Following a punt and a penalty, Prep defensive end Luke Sims sacked Payton in the endzone for a safety. Given the start for Westside’s offense, Prep looked poised to roll, leading 2-0.
But Westside would answer immediately. Sophomore cornerback Avante Dickerson showed why he’s getting D-I attention already by intercepting a Reid Burke pass and returning it 42 yards for a touchdown.
On the ensuing kickoff, Prep committed their second turnover in as many plays. Westside’s Tyson Guzman forced and recovered a fumble by Charlie Herold on the kick return. The Warriors would turn it into three points on a Jack Bush field goal. The first quarter closed with Westside leading 13-2.
Westside would bookend the 2nd quarter with two Joe Stegman rushing touchdowns and take a 23-7.
Out of the halftime break, Prep looked poised to get back into the game, churning out first down after first down, on a 14-play, 58-yard drive that spanned 8:30. But on a fourth down, quarterback Reid Burke was forced to scramble and came up a yard short.
Westside then went to Payton’s legs, cruising down the field before Sam Parsonage’s 27-yard touchdown run. With one quarter to go, Westside found itself leading 30-2.
Payton would add a touchdown early in the fourth quarter to make it 37-2 and start the running clock. Prep’s offense could never get going, totaling only 115 yards on the ground against a small but stingy Warrior defense.
Westside moves to 5-0 on the season after defeating its first ranked opponent of the season. Prep falls to 3-2 and 0-1 in district play.
