Twelve years ago, the top football recruits at Bishop Gorman were just beginning their peewee football careers. It was also the last time an opponent shut out Bishop Gorman football.
That is until last week.
At the hands of Mater Dei (California), Bishop Gorman suffered an embarrassing, 42-0, loss on ESPNU. Mater Dei is the No. 2 ranked team in the country, but it was still shocking to see the powerhouse from Nevada fall in such a non-competitive fashion.

Actually, if Bishop Gorman loses at all, it’s quite surprising. The dynasty football program has won the Nevada state champion nine years in a row and has lost just two games since the beginning of the 2014 season.
Such a defeat can leave a team shellshocked, especially so early in the season. But don’t expect that to happen to this talented Bishop Gorman squad.
The powerhouse program possesses five of the top 11 Nevada prospects in the 2019 recruiting class, including three in the top five.
Credit the Week 1 shutout to early season jitters or poor execution. There’s just way too much talent on the Bishop Gorman roster to not expect this team to bounce back.
It starts with the defense, where the top two Bishop Gorman college recruits reside. Defensive end Treven Ma’ae and cornerback Kyu Kelly, who 247Sports ranks as the No. 3 and 4 players in Nevada, respectively, will both play college football at Power 5 schools.

Ma’ae has received more than a dozen offers from schools such as Oklahoma, USC, and Nebraska. Kelly recorded four interceptions last year and committed to Stanford in June.
Senior Falcon Kaumatule plays end on both sides of the ball and is the No. 8 Nevada recruit as an athlete at 247Sports. Standing at 6-foot-8 and 220 pounds; he just announced his commitment to the University of Utah.

The other two top Bishop Gorman recruits play offensive guard – Beau Taylor, who is the No. 5 prospect in the state and committed to UCLA, and Cade Briggs, who sits at No. 11 on the 247Sports rankings. Together, they weigh more than 550 pounds.
It’s just a matter of time until that brute force from Taylor and Briggs will open holes. And when Bishop Gorman isn’t running the ball inside, Kaumatule is a mismatch against a linebacker in the passing attack.
The Bishop Gorman schedule includes three more out-of-state games, which start this week against Centennial (Arizona). Given all this talent, a better showing this week is almost a given, and once Bishop Gorman returns to playing other Nevada teams, it might once again be no contest.
Their program clearly has the best talent in the state.
