The Liberty Patriots (NV) traveled to Scottsdale to take on defending Arizona State 4A champion Saguaro Sabercats on Friday night.
Each team had costly turnovers in the first half. The Patriots blocked a punt and returned it for a touchdown to take an early lead. Later in the half, Saguaro intercepted Patriots quarterback, Noah Faoa which was returned for a touchdown. The Sabercats special teams continued its struggles and missed the ensuing extra point.
The Patriots slowly but surely pulled away as Saguaro struggled to find an offensive rhythm. Down by 10 points in the second half, a promising drive from the Sabercats ended with Junior quarterback Tyler Beverett throwing an interception in the end zone. Lehi Ausage from the Patriots came down with the high jump ball thrown in the back corner of the end zone.
The Patriots milked the clock in the 4th quarter. They continually ran the ball down the middle behind their big offensive line and a rotating crop of athletic running backs.
Both teams showed flashes of greatness and had athletes all over the field. This early season out of state match-up will help both teams going forward.
