After falling behind 3-0 early in the first quarter, Class B #6 Omaha Skutt Catholic reeled off 45 unanswered points to run away with a win over #4 Elkhorn.
Quarterback Ben Sievers answered Elkhorn’s opening field goal with an 80-yard drive, capped by a touchdown pass to tight end TJ Skradski. Sievers’s second touchdown pass came on Skutt’s next possession.
On the first play following an Elkhorn turnover on downs, Sievers hit Colton Sudbeck with a 47-yard strike that put the Skyhawks up 14-3.
The Elkhorn offense looked to be finding its way after a 36-yard pass from Isaac Hawkins to Matt Hotovy put the Antlers in Skutt territory. It would be Hawkins’s only completion of the game on 11 throws.
A fumbled snap stymied the drive and put Skutt back on offense.
After several tough runs by fullback Jake Archer, I-back Billy Huggins dashed in from 11 yards out to make it 21-3. A third touchdown pass from Sievers, this time to Austin Ash, made it all but done at half. Sievers finished his night with 5 completions on 11 attempts for 105 yards.
Things went from bad to worse for the Antler offense in the second half. Elkhorn’s first three possessions in the third quarter resulted in a lost fumble by freshman running back Aiden Young, a punt, and a bad snap that sailed over the punter’s head. Skutt’s Jarod Epperson alertly scooped the bouncing ball behind the Elkhorn punter and ran in for a score.
Paired with Joey White’s 42-yard field goal, the special teams touchdown made it 38-3 and started the running clock.
Elkhorn managed just 150 total yards and six first downs on the night. The stout Skutt defense has given up only one touchdown in its three wins.
Epperson capped the night with a 65-yard touchdown run to make it 45-3 and move the Skyhawks to 3-1 on the season.
