Despite a glut of top-tier talent, Landry Walker was defeated Thursday night by a more regimented John Curtis team.
Their loss can’t be put down to a lack of playmakers. Walker is stacked deep with specialists like 5-star receiver Devonta Jason and cornerback Corione Harris.
And they made plays, the one-handed catch in the end zone by KU commit Devonta Jason being just one example. Walker’s special teams pulled out a brilliantly convincing fake punt featuring, you guessed it, Devonta Jason with a shovel pass that ended in a much needed first down conversion. Junior Chad Alexander was another standout, racking up 208 offensive yards and a touchdown.
Dueling quarterbacks Ja’Quan Dorsey and Tory Cargo replace Walker’s former QB and Mr. Football Keytaon Thompson, who is now backing up Nick Fitzgerald at Mississippi State. Although they put up more passing yards than the Patriots, they were plagued with mistakes that lead to four turnovers and plenty of opportunities for Curtis to get into the red zone.
Curtis’ Sophomore QB Collin Guggenheim showcased what he could do with his legs as well as his arm, throwing to Tyrone Legette for the game’s first score and running in their third six points all by himself. Legette’s 95-yard kick return netted him his second score of the half.
Curtis’ Special Teams were also in evidence and made themselves known, foiling a kick and a two-point conversion attempt by Walker and of course returning that kick for a 95-yard touchdown.
The Patriots go on to host the Grayson Rams of Georgia on September 9th.
